The Mask of Social Media

The Mask of Social Media

This episode of MSO is dedicated to my late father, John A. Shabazz!

Many of us always seem to be more comfortable expressing ourselves from behind a mask. We’ll take a chance on doing the good, bad or ugly just as long as it can hide our identity. So what about the rampant technological communication in our world today? We all text and email and that can sometimes muddy the tone and create misinterpretation when messaging…but what about the masquerade ball of social media brings out – which is the most dangerous of all.

We all know people only show what they want the public to see on social media. This can be very misleading to your audience, but this that the main goal here?

  • Whether it is a post on Facebook (a plate of food, offering up a "political or public" opinion or looking for "likes").
  • A response or tweet on Twitter (giving your followers hourly or daily updates on your life).
  • Photos posted on Instagram about a birthday, workout, selfie, or even a “perfect life or relationship”.

What are we really trying to do on social media? Present this great life we are living in? Also, do we even think about the real harm we do to others watching us?

My guest (John, Latonia) and I touch on the above question and then some – you'll want to listen in!
